What Many People Do Not Understand Is Whether They Have Sinned Or Not Because Of The Thoughts They May Have Had, Even Though Some Would Definitely Say They Have Sinful Thoughts. When it comes to sinning and losing forgiveness, some people think they can sin as much as they like and it does not matter because they have claimed salvation through Lord Jesus Christ; however, they are in for a shock.

Sinning Christians may not be true Christians. To become a Christian one has to repent from dead works (which are sins) and exercise faith towards God (Hebrews 6:1) through Lord Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 3:15). If there is no repentance from sin, there is no faith exercised toward God.

A person who continues to sin and claims to be exercising faith in God is not really practicing what he is claiming to do. Honoring God with one’s lips (Mark 7:6) but not adhering to His law of righteousness from the heart (Hebrews 8:10) is tantamount to being condemned as a hypocrite and going to the place where there is gnashing of teeth (Matthew 24:51).

• For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. (Hebrews 10:26-27)

• For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. (Hebrews 6:4-8)

The prospects of salvation decrease if one decides to willfully sin, after having become a Christian, a partaker of the Holy Spirit and having tasted the goodness of the word of God. Putting Jesus on the cross again is to deny the reason He died in the first place, so that your sins can be forgiven and you can be empowered to walk in holiness by the Holy Spirit.
The emphasis is on willfulness to knowingly sin, not on finding yourself in a situation where your weakness gets the better of you, even though you would rather not sin, or where the mind is deceived. But apostasy is a reality. People can lose the salvation they may have at first sought, if they decide to willfully sin.

Unfortunately, there is an unbiblical teaching about being saved by grace alone, which rejects the truth that Bible teaches salvation is by faith. Salvation is never by grace alone, even though the grace of God permits salvation to be through faith, and more grace is extended to those who exercise faith.

Faith towards God requires repentance from dead works of sin and the willingness of the individual to walk in the ways of righteousness. Sin is the disregard of righteousness. Those who are righteous shall live by faith.

• For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:17)

• “But my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls. (Hebrews 10:38-39)

Clearly, then, people can lose the prospects of salvation that they may have thought they had obtained, if they turn their back on Lord Jesus Christ and delight in sinning, rather than seeking the truth.
