There are many verses that point to the value of productivity and how to obtain success. Notably this instruction from the book of Proverbs:
- Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer or ruler, she prepares her food in summer, and gathers her sustenance in harvest. How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest,11 and poverty will come upon you like a vagabond, and want like an armed man. (Proverbs 6:6-11)
God actually desires that people be righteous and possess an abundance. On the other hand, those who are sluggards or evil will not be able to defeat them, take advantage of them or even steal from those who are righteous, because with God on their side, they will be stronger. Although, the following verses have to do with agriculture, the principle remains. The blessing is upon those who acknowledge that the Lord God is the Source of Life.
- “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed. From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. But you say, ‘How shall we return?’ Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How are we robbing thee?’ In your tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me; the whole nation of you. Bring the full tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house; and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil; and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the Lord of hosts. Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the Lord of hosts. (Malachi 3:6-12)
- And the Lord made his people very fruitful, and made them stronger than their foes. Psalm 105:24
- They sow fields, and plant vineyards, and get a fruitful yield. Psalm 107:37
- You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be happy, and it shall be well with you. Psalm 128:2
- Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. (Psalm 1:1-3)
- “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-9)
People may obtain wealth and an abundance of goods, but the most important thing in life is expressed by Jesus:
And he said to them, “Take heed, and beware of all covetousness; for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’
And he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.’
But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’
So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:15-24)
While there are many verses to do with productivity, real success, everlasting success, is found in being rich toward God.
