THE MYSTERY OF THE 144,000 PEOPLE IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION PUZZLES STILL TODAY BECAUSE THEY COULD BE JEWS OR THEY MIGHT BE GENTILES. One Thing That Is For Sure, Nobody Thinks They Are A Reference To 144,000 Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Or Any Other Religious Grouping. The real question is whether this is a symbolic reference to a group of people or an actual number of a particular class of individuals.

The book of Revelation informs us:
3 Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God upon their foreheads.”
4 And I heard the number of the sealed, a hundred and forty-four thousand sealed, out of every tribe of the sons of Israel,
5 twelve thousand sealed out of the tribe of Judah, twelve thousand of the tribe of Reuben, twelve thousand of the tribe of Gad,
6 twelve thousand of the tribe of Asher, twelve thousand of the tribe of Naphtali, twelve thousand of the tribe of Manasseh,
7 twelve thousand of the tribe of Simeon, twelve thousand of the tribe of Levi, twelve thousand of the tribe of Issachar,
8 twelve thousand of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve thousand of the tribe of Joseph, twelve thousand sealed out of the tribe of Benjamin.
(Revelation 7:3-8)
Verse four says, “I heard the number of the sealed, a hundred and forty-four thousand sealed, out of every tribe of the sons of Israel.”

There is no one from the tribes of Dan or Ephraim among the 144,000. Therefore, every tribe of Israel is not included. The tribe of Joseph could represent Ephraim. After all, the tribe of Ephraim came from one of Joseph’s sons, as did Mannaseh which is included among the 144,000.
Since every tribe of Israel is not included, we can assume that this does not mean the literal physical Israel. Besides, the Israelites today mainly derive from Mizrahim, Askenazim, Sephardim ethnic groupings (Jewish ethnic divisions). They would not whether they were a member of a tribe or not. The exception possibly being the Cohens( Kohanim,) and the Levis (Leviim) ,who lay claim to being Levites. But these claims are not accepted by everyone (Kohens, Levis & Yisraels).

In chapter fourteen of the book of Revelation, we read:
Then I looked, and lo, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads.
2 And I heard a voice from heaven like the sound of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder; the voice I heard was like the sound of harpers playing on their harps,
3 and they sing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders. No one could learn that song except the hundred and forty-four thousand who had been redeemed from the earth.
4 It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are chaste;[a] it is these who follow the Lamb wherever he goes; these have been redeemed from mankind as first fruits for God and the Lamb,
5 and in their mouth no lie was found, for they are spotless.
(Revelation 14:1-5)
Since the Book of Revelation has much symbolism, it is highly probable that these tribes represent something other than the physical tribes of Israel.

The individual members of the tribes are to be servants. Servants within the New Testament mean to do the work of the Lord. The work of the Lord is to serve so that people come to salvation and the knowledge of the truth.
  • Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he shall proclaim justice to the Gentiles. (Matthew 12:18)
  • It shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant (Matthew 20:26)
  • Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. (Matthew 24:45-47)
Who these tribes represent we will know when the day comes, because they will be found doing the service of the Lord and demonstrating that they have overcome the world. They will be lights to the world: pure, holy and blameless individuals walking in the Spirit of God
  • For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God (Romans 8:19).
Obviously, these individuals are not to be found at the present time.
