The spiritually dead make out how great the dead were when they were alive but foolishly overlook the futility of their words and actions, because they think that there is meaning in merely being born to die.
Today people celebrate a person’s life and, in doing so, they demonstrate the futility of being born to die. Especially when they will curse the person when he or she is alive and then rave about how wonderful the person was now that the person is dead.
To my mind, the futility of glorifying those who have no eternal life is the reason Jesus said, to the person seeking to be excused, that he should let the dead bury the dead. This is the account from the Gospel of Luke:
To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”Why would a person want to celebrate a futile life when a person could celebrate the birth of those who are born into eternal life?
But he said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:59–60)
People celebrate the birth of a child into this world, knowing that the child could contract any one of many diseases, will suffer and eventually die. How much more should a follower of Jesus rejoice when a person passes from death into life because they have accepted the truth and are born of the Word of Eternal Life.
