Happy Riches, Answer requested by Diane Shatto
The question hints that Joshua may have received a special revelation from Moses that is not necessarily explicit in the Law that he wrote in the presence of the Israelites.
The text from the site, to which you refer, states:
- Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings. And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.
From reading the above text in the light of your question regarding a revelation, one is inclined to think that you are referring to the fact that an altar of whole stones was used rather than anything that had been worked with by the hand of man. This being the case, the revelation of Moses that was passed on to Joshua could have been that there is nothing that man can do that is acceptable to God, other than present what has already been created and acknowledge that all the glory belongs to the only Immortal Creator of Life and the Universe.
The second element of any revelation that may have been passed on to Joshua is that if a human were to do anything, it is to imitate what God has already written down for the good of humankind. Relationships are the most important component of being human. For humans created in the image of God, not to have a relationship with the Lord God, Creator of Life, and experience the joy that it brings with one’s fellows, is to abhor the purpose of existence. The Ten Commandments outline what is required within the relationships humans have with each other and with their Creator.
- To all perfection I see a limit, but your commands are boundless. (Psalm 119:96)
Everything humans do has been accommodated for within the Ten Commandments. Yet the foolish in their worldly wisdom think that by disregarding them completely, they will create utopia.
Now this leads to the possibility of a third aspect in respect to any revelation of Moses: without absolute righteousness, no society will last the test of time.
