The book of Thessalonians clearly states that those who are to be saved will be resurrected complete as a body, and complete with a soul and a spirit.
- May the God of peace himself sanctify you completely. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 5:23)
The spirit is the component within our makeup that enables us to think and distinguishes us from animals. For, along with humans, animals have a soul and a body. Animals do not have a spirit.
Humans are spirit beings and, therefore, are capable of worshiping the Lord God Creator of Heaven and Earth in spirit and truth—which is what the Almighty seeks, but only those who fall in love with righteousness, wisdom and reality will ever know this.
- God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:24)
- Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. (Matthew 10:28)
The idea of humans possessing a spirit, a soul and a body originates from the Bible.
Many do not accept what is written in the Bible, but this is their prerogative. We have freewill to believe whatever we like, and some people just like expressing their opinion; others genuinely want to know why we are born to die and have to suffer in between the two epochs of coming into this world and leaving it.
The Bible informs us that after death comes judgment. Many refuse to acknowledge this also. So I suppose those who reject the truth will have to wait until they die to find out whether their soul and body will be destroyed, even though the worm that will antagonize their spirit will live on.
The human trichotomy of spirit, soul and body did not originate with Christians. That humans have a body, a soul and a spirit is found in the books of Moses; written some fifteen hundred years before people were called Christians.
