When Moses received instructions from God, he was given that which had multiple purposes that covered personal salvation, individual psychology, social responsibility, health and financial blessings.
When speaking about tithes, many people today have real issues with this, as they did in the days of the Israelites, as was written in the book of Malachi.
The reason for people having a problem with tithes and tithing has to do with their lack of generosity and that fact that they do not trust God to honor His Word—which brings their salvation into question!
When Jesus died, he cancelled the legal demands against us, there was no requirement for Jews or other Israelites (Apostle Paul was from the tribe of Benjamin—Romans 11:1) to keep the Mosaic Laws—which exclude what was written by God Himself (Exodus 20:1-17).
- And you, who were dead in trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, having canceled the bond which stood against us with its legal demands; this he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the principalities and powers and made a public example of them, triumphing over them in him. Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a sabbath. These are only a shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ. (Colossians 2:13-17)
What you will notice is the principle of the tithe is not nailed to the Cross. This is because the tithe was not specifically a Mosaic requirement. The tithe was given to Abraham so that He might learn to grow in faith.
Tithing is a principle by which we can grow in faith, because we have the opportunity to prove God as He honors His Word—very interactive.
People who do not tithe harm themselves—no one else—because the devourer has the right of access to them.
- The promise to Abraham and his descendants, that they should inherit the world, did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith....That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants—not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham, for he is the father of us all (Romans 4:13-16)
Note what Jesus said when talking to the Jews:
- They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do what Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God; this is not what Abraham did...." (John 8:39-40)
What did Abraham do?
- ...And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have sworn to the Lord God Most High, maker of heaven and earth, that I would not take a thread or a sandal-thong or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ I will take nothing...(Genesis 14:20-24)
Abraham did not tithe of the spoils that were taken from the kings when rescuing Lot. For Abraham took not of the spoils. He tithed of the spoils that he got from Pharaoh. But more than this, Abraham tithed a tenth of everything!
People who call themselves Christians can follow the example of Abraham and tithe or they can do their own thing.
- For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed. From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. But you say, ‘How shall we return? (Malachi 3:6-7)
More to the point, according to the Apostle Paul, not until after Abraham had tithed was his faith reckoned as righteousness.
- Thus Abraham “believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.” (Galatians 3:6)
- For what does the scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.” (Romans 4:3)
- And he believed the Lord; and he reckoned it to him as righteousness. (Genesis 15:6)
Nevertheless, according to the Bible, tithing is not essential for salvation, only for blessings and protection from the Devourer.
But since Christians in the USA give a mere 2.5% rather than tithe, maybe this is why they give more than 10% to the god of this world via their credit cards.
One caveat when giving to the Lord, those who are receiving the funds need to be laborers in the Kingdom of God and not numbered among those who do what is of the flesh.
