Maybe, from a human perspective, this is similar to authoritative parenting and not the authoritarian style of parenting that those who believe in central governments dictate. This applies to any form of government model that is used to control people.
When we learn to walk in the ways of God, we learn to relate to people according to what is best for each individual relationship and not because one person is seeking to exalt himself above others. The concept of self-promotion is a distortion of true capitalism. Self-promotion is a demonic strategy that is used to divide people rather than unite them. Self-promotion does not lead to the appreciation of one for another.
When we seek the truth, we have to be honest with ourselves and with other people. We need not be dependent upon others for learning the truth. Instead, we need to be pragmatic in our thinking and actions. We need to realize that we are interdependent individuals who interact with those in the world with whom we live. This interaction is the most important experience in our lives. For which one of us enjoys being on the end of a hostile exchange of views or persecution that leads to physical violence. All the people I know resent hostility towards themselves.
When we deny ourselves we put our trust in God to teach us and protect us from danger. But we do not then tempt God by abusing other people and, having become abusive, expect to be honored by our Heavenly Father, who desires that we learn to love one another, even those who are our enemies. Having said this, provocation can be done without intent to insult; if we are seeking to cause people to consider matters that they otherwise would ignore.
While the Bible states fools do not acknowledge the truth that the Universe exists because it has been created by the Creator, this does not mean that we have the right to persecute arrogant, ignorant, people in their foolishness. If we were do so, and then we find ourselves about to be brutally assaulted by a violent mob, God would not protect us, because we are not acting righteously.
On the other hand, if we decide to ask our Heavenly Father to teach us the truth about life and how we can enjoy what is rightfully ours, we will find ourselves being approved of both men and God.

How do we deny ourselves so that we can successfully experience what the Holy Spirit has for us in the Kingdom of God? By being humble and letting God enable us to understand His ways and the benefits that come from walking in them.
