Biblical Theology: Faith as Core to Human Existence
Faith precedes seeing—because it is rooted in being.
- Hebrews 11:1 (WEB):
“Now
faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.”
Faith is not merely belief in
propositions; it is the assurance that flows from the unseen. It
connects a person to ultimate reality (God) beyond the visible world.
By faith, we understand our origins.
- Hebrews 11:3 (WEB):
“By
faith, we understand that the universe has been framed by the word of God…”
Faith becomes the lens of being,
allowing humans to grasp not only how the world came to be but why they
themselves exist.
Faith as Existential Orientation
The statement “faith is the essence
of being” reflects a Christian existential view:
- Human beings are not defined merely by biology or
intellect, but by their orientation toward what is ultimate.
- To be human is to be a creature of trust. You are either trusting in God, self, others,
systems—or spiraling in mistrust, which leads to despair.
- Faith, in this sense, is the fundamental posture of the
soul. It determines identity,
direction, and purpose.
Faith as Ontological Connection to God
God is not an idea to be agreed with, but a Being to be trusted.
- God is the “I AM” (Exodus 3:14)—the ground of all
being.
- When humans realize faith, they enter into alignment
with divine being.
- Faith thus becomes the channel by which we
participate in divine life.
2 Peter 1:4 (WEB):
“…that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature…”
Faith is not merely a mental assent;
it is existential participation in the life and purpose of God.
Without Faith, Being Disintegrates
- Romans 14:23 (WEB):
“…Whatever
is not of faith is sin.”
Faith is the only pure motive
from which humans can live rightly before God. Without faith, even morality
becomes self-referential or hypocritical.
- Faith grounds hope, love, and purpose. Remove faith, and being becomes fragmented:
- Without faith → no identity
- Without faith → no reason to hope
- Without faith → love becomes transactional
Thus, faith is the cohesive force
of human life—what binds mind, spirit, and purpose together in coherent
being.
Jesus Christ: The Embodiment of Faithful Being
✝️ Jesus is both the object of faith and the model of
faith-filled life.
- Galatians 2:20 (WEB):
“…the
life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God…”
- His life of perfect obedience and trust demonstrates what
it means to be truly human.
In Christ, faith and being are
united:
“In him was life, and the life was
the light of men.” — John 1:4 (WEB)
